Pack Leader of The WeekEach week or so we gather together in our Tribal Council and either randomly select or vote for one of the remaining members of our classroom to be the Pack Leader of the Week (P. L. O. T. W.) The honor and duties of the P. L. O. T. W. include, but are not limited to, being the line leader, running errands, leading the Pledge of Allegiance, distributing mail and lunch tokens, and getting a cold pop (or juice) and candy bar (or healthy snack). Week 10Back in the saddle again, we certainly missed the zoo, especially with such lovely fall weather! Students diligently worked on finding, writing, and editing their "seed moments" from the zoo. Social studies we learned about the Maya & Aztecs. Mathematics found us with some basic algebra and multiplication expressions. Students also were very energized to start reading the Dive trilogy by Gordon Korman, it is amazing to hear kids groan when they are done reading aloud, because they want to continue! The immunity challenge students participated in was the Balance Beam challenge. For the first time ever, all the tribes completed the challenge in less than 3 minutes, with immunity going to the Maroon tribe! Congratulations Maroon Muskateers! http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608795386024/ Week 9 - Big Zoo LessonCheck back for links to photos showcasing our learning! Day 4 - Animal adaptations with LIVE animals, SSP plan with Mr. Dennis, and Animal observations. http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608534684183/ Day 3 - Habitat design & animal adaptations tour, food chains and energy webs http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608489296342/ Day 2 - behind the scenes at the temporary penguin exhibit, a science experiment, and interview with a zookeeper. http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608462012256/ Fantastic Day 1 at the zoo, click on this link to view photos of the students' excellent educational experiences! http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608435647413/
Weeks 7 & 8We have tribes! A hearty welcome to the four tribes, who are working on developing their tribal nicknames. Their colors are Red, Teal, Green, and Burgundy. Students are working diligently to prepare for next week's Big Zoo Lesson. They have been working on their observation skills during recess time. Many have made interesting "discoveries" about patterns and trends for behavior of our "subjects." They are really starting to think "beyond" the obvious and discuss some interesting hypothesis! Students have also been working on their note taking, and creative side for capturing their observations. Here students are working to re-create artifacts. http://flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608317534903/show/ Week 6The Big Transition was made on Friday, and we bid adios to 8 of our fellow Meyer Islanders. We wish the all the best in their new classroom. The good news is that they'll be joining us for the Big Zoo Lesson in two weeks! + "Fudge", "KB", & "Stevie Wonder" Week 5This week students have been working very diligently on their MEAP preparation, so they earned a challenge not seen on Meyer Island for SIX YEARS! The Raging River Crossing Challenge incorporates teamwork, communication, cooperation, critical thinking, and lots of enthusiasm. The kids succeeded admirably, working together to overcome the obstacles they were presented with. Congratulations on a job well done! http://flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608029120168/ Week 4Another team building challenge this week as students finally learned who their tribe mates would be. Each tribe is composed of six "islanders" who are developing their 4 "C's" of Meyer Island through a variety of activities this week. Today's challenge was "Dude! Who took my shoe?", which involved honing communication skills for group members. Week 2We are learning about the 4 "C's" of Meyer Island. They are cooperation, contemplation, calculation, and communication. This week students participated in a breakout challenge. This challenge involved moving the ball across the gym without any students using their hands to touch it. It took several tries, along with many different ideas until a successful method was found! Following this challenge, students partook of a tribal council. Each child shared how they believed each other illustrated the 4 "C's" in completing the challenge, as well as giving kudos to their peers. Unfortunately, I cannot locate the photos of this challenge, they are hiding in the digital domain of my computer or camera! Don't worry, I'll keep looking. Week 1This week's team building challenge was "Tied Up in Knots", and wow what a result. The students worked together in their small "pods" to get tied up in a human knot. Each group then progressively worked themselves into tougher situations & "untied" themselves. Pods united to create more challenging scenarios, finally the entire class created a gigantic knot & after a few tries, they succeeded! Unfortunately, I cannot locate the photos of this challenge, they are hiding in the digital domain of my computer or camera! Don't worry, I'll keep looking. http://flickr.com/photos/meyerisland/sets/72157608029106980/ Click here to revisit the 2007 - 2008 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways Click here to revisit the 2006 - 2007 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways Click here to revisit the 2005 - 2006 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways Click here to revisit the 2004 - 2005 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways Click here to revisit the 2003 - 2004 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways Click here to revisit the 2002 - 2003 Meyer Island PLOTW castawaysClick here to revisit the 2001 - 2002 Meyer Island PLOTW castaways
